Managing to find a yard that could handle a boat the size of Pegaso in the short time period and then to successfully pull off a major refit in that time frame was a huge achievement and I could not have wished for a better team to have stood at my side during this time.

Without your intimate knowledge of the Thai marine industry and your superb contacts not only in Thailand, but also in the entire region I do not think we could have pulled it off. Not only did you promise good results, in the end you delivered excellent results and I hope that more captains see the great potential Thailand has not only as world class destination but as a country to undertake refits even of a major yacht. All I can do is wish you the very best for the future and to continue what you are doing best: delivering the promise.

Yacht Pegaso, a 53 m Proteksan Yacht out of the Turquoise Yard in Tuzla, Turkey, was as originally booked in for her 5 year special survey and refit in China. This followed a busy year cruising Asia, during which the vessel completed some 30,000 miles. Unfortunately, at the last minute, the yard in China could not do the work. Subsequently, a fraught few weeks at the beginning of January were spent seeking a suitable facility in which to carry out the works required.

The window during which the works were to be carried out was restricted as the owner was due to be back on board in late April. During our search, Yacht Solutions in Phuket were approached for suggestions and ideas. We had previously used Yacht Solutions as general ship’s agents and freight forwarding during preivious trips to Thailand.

After a short period of time, Yacht Solutions presented Bangkok Dock Co in downtown Bangkok. It is a government run yard of the size required to accommodate Pegaso, with two dry docks and basic facilities. As we had no other viable options in Asia within the time frame and our options were limited, we contracted with the yard, despite certain reservations about the facility, due to their lack of knowledge of white boats. The contract was dependent on the proviso that Yacht Solutions act as a go between, translator and general aid. They would also be resposible for taking care of the contractural works more akin to white boats, which the yard could not accommodate.

We entered the dry dock on 23 January 2007 and left the shipyard, on schedule, on 10 April 2007. This allowed sufficient time for the vessel to travel to it’s destination and for the crew to get the vessel ready for the Owner’s arrival.

During the process, the interaction and involvement of Yacht Solutions was essential, the yard period went as smoothly as can be expected. Their western knowledge of the requirements of our industry coupled with their understanding of the local customs and work ethics made them an essential go between and facilitated the completion of all of the works we envisaged and, more importantly, on time.

I recommend Yacht Solutions both in terms of general ships agents and also in terms of more involved projects such as refits and yard work within Thailand.
